In the South West a large number of buildings have been built into the hillside or have basements which means that some of if not all of the walls are soil retaining. This means that the walls of the building are holding back the earth and water can enter the building through these soil retaining walls.

Before any internal damp works are undertaken all external defects should be checked and repaired as needed. Causes of penetrating damp are not always obvious and are quite often hidden.
